How much does a good standing desk cost in the UK?

Standing desk prices in the UK run from about £90 to well over £2,000 for the same basic idea, which makes it hard to tell what you are actually buying.
Here is what changes as the price goes up, based on the specifications that matter rather than the marketing.
Short answer
Under £150 buys a single-motor desk with a thin top and a short warranty. £250–£450 is where properly engineered dual-motor desks start, with 100–140 kg capacity and long frame warranties. Above £700 you are mostly paying for brand, exotic materials or four-leg designs.
The price bands, and what each one buys
Real UK street prices for a complete desk, roughly 120–140 cm wide.

| Price | What you typically get |
|---|---|
| £75–£150 | Single motor, two stages, ~70–80 kg, splice-board top, 1–2 year warranty |
| £180–£260 | Dual motor entering the range, ~100 kg, laminate top, longer frame warranty |
| £280–£450 | Dual motor, two or three stages, 100–140 kg, anti-collision, memory presets, 5-year-class frame warranty |
| £500–£850 | Heavier frames, four-leg designs, metal or premium tops, brand names |
| £1,000+ | Design brands and solid hardwood tops; the mechanism is rarely better |
What actually changes as you spend more
Below about £150, the compromises are structural: one motor, a lower weight rating, a top made from spliced strips rather than a single board, and a warranty measured in months on the electronics.
Between roughly £250 and £450, you get the things that decide whether the desk is still good in five years — two motors, a stiffer frame, anti-collision, memory presets and a long warranty on the frame and motors.
Above that, the mechanism rarely improves. You are paying for materials, brand and design. That can be entirely worth it — a solid oak top is a lovely thing — but it will not lift more or last longer.
The costs that are easy to miss
Delivery: most UK sellers include it, but check for surcharges to the Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland, which can add £50–£100.
Returns: a desk is bulky and awkward to send back. Check the window, who pays for the return, and whether an assembled desk is accepted at all — the answers vary a lot. Ours is 60 days, unused and in its original packaging, with the return at your cost or a collection quote from us.
Cable management: almost never included. Budget £20–£60 for a tray and a spine, or you end up with the cables you were trying to escape.
Where we sit, and why
At full price our complete desks run £319 to £529 and frames £269 to £399, all inc VAT with free next-day delivery — check the product pages for current offers. That places us in the band where the engineering is real but you are not paying for a badge.
The reason we can hold that is straightforward: we import from the same factory that supplies several better-known European brands, and we do not run permanent fake discounts.
Beware the permanent sale
A large part of this market runs on inflated list prices — a desk 'reduced' from £499 to £199 that has never been sold at £499. If a countdown timer resets when you reload the page, you are looking at a marketing device, not a deal.
Judge on the specification and the terms: motors, stages, load, warranty length, returns window, and who pays for collection.
What five years actually costs
A £120 desk that fails in year two and a £380 desk that lasts ten are not really the same purchase, and the headline price hides that.

| Budget desk | Mid-range desk | |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | £120 | £380 |
| Typical warranty | 1–2 years electronics | 5 years frame and motors |
| Likely replacement | Year 3–4 | Year 10+ |
| Cost over 5 years | £240–£360 | £380 |
| Cost per working day | ≈ 13p | ≈ 15p |
The gap over a decade is smaller than the gap on the day, which is worth knowing before optimising hard on the sticker price.
Where UK prices come from
Almost every dual-motor frame sold in the UK comes from a handful of factories, mostly in China and Taiwan. That is not a criticism — it is why a £280 desk and an £800 desk often share a mechanism.
What changes between them is the desktop material, the finish, the brand, the warranty and who is on the phone when something breaks. Shipping and warehousing add real cost too: a container from Asia still runs $3,000–5,000 against $1,500–2,000 before 2020, and a desk is bulky freight.
Questions that reveal the real price
Before you compare two desks on price, get the answers to these.
- 01Is delivery included, and does that hold for the Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland?
- 02What is the return window, who pays to send it back, and will they accept it assembled?
- 03How long is the warranty on the control box and handset specifically, not just the frame?
- 04Can you buy a replacement keypad in year six?
- 05Is the quoted load the dynamic rating or the static one?
Is a cheap desk ever the right answer?
Yes. If you are testing whether you will use a standing desk at all, if it is for a spare room used a few hours a week, or if you are renting and moving in six months, a budget desk is a reasonable bet.
It stops being reasonable when it becomes your main desk for eight hours a day. At that point the failure is not the money, it is the fortnight without a working desk while you sort out a replacement.
Questions, answered.
Is a £100 standing desk any good?+
It will go up and down. Expect a single motor, a lower weight limit, a spliced top and a short warranty on the electronics, which are the parts most likely to fail.
How much should I spend for daily full-time use?+
Roughly £280–£450 buys a dual-motor desk with real capacity and a long frame warranty, which is the sensible band for eight hours a day.
Are expensive desks more stable?+
Not necessarily. Foot width, crossbar design and levelling matter more than price. Some very expensive desks are less stable than mid-range ones.
