Choosing a standing desk
Are standing desks actually worth it?+
As a tool for breaking up sitting, yes — UK workplace trials cut sitting time by over an hour a day, with less back and neck discomfort. Be sceptical of bigger claims: the benefit comes from switching posture and moving more, not from standing itself. That's why every Desko has one-touch memory presets — the desk only pays off if switching is effortless.
Will I actually use it, or stop standing after a month?+
The honest answer: most people who abandon standing do so because switching was annoying or their feet hurt. Three things make the habit stick — one-touch presets (no holding buttons), a sit-stand rhythm like 20-8-2 rather than heroic all-day standing, and an anti-fatigue mat. Set your two heights on day one and the desk does the remembering.
Do standing desks wobble at full height?+
Every two-leg desk flexes slightly at maximum height — that's physics, not a defect. What separates desks is how much: steel columns (widest at the top), a full-width crossbar and — on the V3 — three telescoping stages keep ours steady enough to type on at full height. Two honest tips: half of reported wobble is loose bolts (re-tighten after two weeks) or thick carpet — see below.
Single motor or dual motor — does it matter?+
Dual means one motor in each leg: higher capacity, and it stays level when the load is uneven — a heavy monitor arm at one end, say. Single motor means one motor geared through the crossbar, which is quieter and cheaper and perfectly good for a lighter setup. The Desko V1 is single motor; the V2 and V3 are dual. If you're at the desk full-time or hanging weight off one end, take the dual.
What's the difference between 2-stage and 3-stage legs?+
Stages are the telescoping column sections. Three stages travel further — lower lows and higher highs — and overlap more, which also makes them stiffer at height. If you're notably tall or short, or ever want a walking pad, choose 3-stage (our V2 and V3). The 2-stage V1 covers average heights at a lower price.
I'm very tall / very short — will it fit me?+
Check the height range before anything else; this is where cheap desks genuinely fail. The V1 spans 700–1150 mm, the V2 700–1200 mm and the three-stage V3 600–1250 mm — the V3 covers roughly the 5th to 95th percentile, sitting or standing. Rule of thumb: elbows at 90° with shoulders relaxed. Our height calculator in the guides gives your exact numbers.
Does it work on carpet?+
Yes — but thick carpet is the hidden cause of a lot of 'wobbly desk' complaints, because the feet sink unevenly. Use the levelling feet to balance it, and expect slightly more sway at full height on deep pile than on hard floor. That's the floor, not the frame.
Can I put a monitor arm on it?+
Yes — the tops are 18+ mm laminate over a solid core and take standard clamps and grommet mounts, with cable ports both sides at the rear. One tip from experienced owners: re-tighten the clamp after the first few weeks, since any moving desk introduces gentle vibration.
Should I just get a desk converter instead?+
Converters are cheaper and sit on your existing desk, but they wobble more, shrink your work surface, and do nothing for your seated ergonomics. If you'll genuinely use sit-stand daily, a full desk moves everything — screen, keyboard, coffee — as one unit. If you're unsure you'll stand at all, our 60-day return window gives you longer than most to decide.
How much does a good standing desk cost?+
UK reality: under ~£250 usually compromises on stability, motor life or warranty; £300–£700 buys a properly engineered dual-motor desk; beyond that you're mostly paying for brand or exotic tops. Desko complete desks run £319–£529 with a 5-year frame warranty — deliberately in the value sweet spot, and you can verify every spec on the compare page.
Do standing desks use much electricity?+
Almost none. The motors draw power only during the few seconds of movement, and standby is a fraction of a watt — realistically under £5 a year in the UK. The kettle is a far bigger deal than the desk.
Health & ergonomics
How long should I stand each day?+
Start with 30–60 minutes spread through the day and build up. The widely-recommended rhythm is 20-8-2: about 20 minutes sitting, 8 standing, 2 moving, repeated. Avoid standing blocks longer than 30–60 minutes — the goal is alternating, not endurance.
Will a standing desk fix my back pain?+
It can genuinely help as part of a good setup — studies show less neck and lower-back discomfort when people alternate sitting and standing at a correctly-set height. But it's not a cure on its own, and standing badly (or too long) can make things worse. Set the height right — elbows at 90°, screen at eye level — and switch often. If pain persists, see a professional.
Is standing all day better than sitting all day?+
No — you'd be swapping one static-posture problem for another. Prolonged standing brings its own issues: leg fatigue and circulatory strain. NHS-style guidance is to break up long periods of sitting; the desk's job is to make that switch a one-touch habit.
Do standing desks burn calories or help with weight loss?+
Honestly: barely. Standing burns only around 8 extra calories an hour versus sitting — Harvard Health's comparison is that three hours of standing roughly equals one carrot. Buy it for comfort, focus and movement, not weight loss; a 30-minute walk beats a full day of standing.
Are there proven benefits, then?+
The best-evidenced ones: breaking up sitting blunts post-meal blood-sugar spikes, alternating posture reduces musculoskeletal discomfort, and users in workplace studies report more energy and focus. Modest, real, and worth having — that's the honest pitch.
Is standing work safe for everyone?+
Mostly, in alternating doses. If you're pregnant, have circulation problems or joint issues, bias toward more sitting with shorter, more frequent standing bouts, and speak to your GP or occupational health. An anti-fatigue mat and supportive shoes make a bigger difference than people expect.
Delivery
When will my desk arrive?+
Order by 1pm Monday–Friday and it ships the same day for next-working-day delivery. Orders after 1pm, or at the weekend, ship the next working day. Delivery is free on orders over £50 to most UK postcodes — the full list is on the delivery page, and your postcode tells you which rate applies at checkout before you pay.
What delivery options are there?+
Two. Standard delivery — free on orders over £50 to the postcode areas on our free-delivery list, next working day — a 120 cm desk or a frame by tracked courier, a 140 or 160 cm desk on a pallet. Or collection from our Peterborough warehouse, Monday to Saturday, which takes £50 off each complete desk and £25 off each frame because it saves us a courier. We do not offer a two-man or in-room assembly service; assembly takes about 30 minutes and everything you need is in the box.
How does it arrive — boxes or a pallet?+
It depends on the size. A 120 cm desk, or a frame on its own, comes by tracked courier in two boxes: the frame (the heavy one, around 22 kg) and the desktop. They usually arrive together, but couriers occasionally split them by a few hours — if one hasn't arrived by the next working day, we chase it for you. A 140 or 160 cm desk is too big for a parcel network, so it comes on one pallet by tail-lift lorry and is delivered to ground level at your address — the driver doesn't carry it inside, so have a second pair of hands for the stairs.
Do you deliver outside mainland UK?+
Yes, anywhere in the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland, Aberdeen, the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Wight fall outside our free-delivery list, so a flat £95 carrier surcharge is added at checkout and they typically take 2–3 working days rather than next-day. The Scottish islands (including Skye, Arran, Bute, Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles), the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isles of Scilly are priced by our carrier one delivery at a time, so we quote those individually — email or call us with your postcode before you order. We do not ship to the Republic of Ireland or to any address outside the UK.
Can I choose a delivery day? Will they bring it upstairs?+
For a courier delivery (120 cm desks and frames), the tracking link lets you move delivery to a day that suits, or nominate a neighbour or safe place; the boxes are 22 kg and 15–25 kg, so plan the stairs. A pallet (140 and 160 cm desks) is delivered to ground level at your address and not carried inside. Please do move the date on the tracking link rather than letting a delivery fail — a failed attempt or a same-day cancellation is charged to us by the carrier, and we have to pass that on at cost.
Are you actually a UK company? Any customs fees?+
Yes — UK company, UK warehouse, UK phone number (01733 300518). Prices include VAT and there are no customs or import charges. What you see at checkout is what you pay.
Assembly
How hard is assembly, honestly?+
Around 30 minutes at a comfortable pace. The desktop arrives pre-drilled and jig-aligned, the frame bolts together in six steps, and the hex tools you need are in the box. One person can do it; the final flip is easier with two — the full build is filmed step-by-step on every product page and in the guides.
What's in the box?+
Frame, desktop, keypad, all fixings in labelled packs (with spares), hex tools, cable channel (V3), and a plain-English manual. It's all photographed on every product page — what you see is exactly what arrives. If anything is missing or misaligned, we ship the replacement part next-day, no quibble.
Can I use my own desktop on a Desko frame?+
Yes, within the frame's adjustment range — the V2 and V3 take tops 105 to 180 cm wide, the V1 100.5 to 160 cm, and all three want at least 58 cm of depth. Check your top against that before you buy: a 180 cm top will not fit a V1. The frame outlives any single top — that's the point of buying the system.
Can you assemble it for me?+
We don't offer an assembly service — the honest answer is that you won't need one. It is about 30 minutes, the top is pre-drilled and the tools are in the box; see the film that proves it. The one exception is big business orders: £10,000 or more of desks for an office within about 200 miles of our Peterborough warehouse, and we come and assemble every desk free.
The desk itself
How quiet is it really?+
Under 50 decibels while moving — quieter than a normal conversation, for only a few seconds at a time. You can raise it mid-video-call without anyone noticing.
How much weight can it lift — with my actual setup on it?+
The V1 lifts 100 kg, the V2 120 kg and the V3 140 kg — dynamic load, meaning while moving. For scale: two monitors on arms, a PC tower, and peripherals is typically 20–25 kg. Every model has four to five times that headroom, so capacity is never the deciding factor between them.
Does the anti-collision actually work?+
It senses resistance while moving, stops, and backs off about 2 cm — and the V3 uses a higher-sensitivity version. Honest limits: it reliably detects firm obstructions like chair arms and window sills, but no current-sensing system detects something very soft or light in time. Use the child lock, and don't adjust the desk unattended around small children or pets.
What stops my kids playing with it?+
Every keypad has a child lock — hold the lock combination for three seconds and the controls freeze until unlocked.
What happens after a power cut?+
Your memory presets survive — they're stored in the keypad, not lost with power. If the desk ever gets confused after an outage, the reset takes ten seconds: hold the down button until it reaches its lowest point and clicks. That procedure is in the manual and right here, so you never have to search a forum for it.
Will the desktop scratch or stain? Is it one piece?+
It's a one-piece board — no visible seam down the middle — in FSC-certified laminate that shrugs off coffee, keys and alcohol wipes. Like any laminate it won't love a dropped knife or a dragged monitor stand. Rounded corners and eased edges are standard, with cable ports both sides.
Which colours and sizes are there?+
Every model: white, grey or black laminate with rounded corners, in 120×60, 140×70 or 160×80 cm. Frames come in matching white, grey or black.
Trial, warranty & returns
How do returns work?+
You have 60 days from delivery to change your mind — four times the statutory minimum. To return under that policy the desk needs to be unused and back in its original packaging, so keep the boxes until you are sure. You arrange and pay for the return, or ask us for a collection quote and we will usually sort it at cost. There is no restocking fee, and we refund within 14 days of the desk reaching us. Faulty items are different: we cover those, and we usually send a replacement part rather than taking the desk back.
What does the warranty cover?+
Five years on the frame: motors, control box, keypad, columns and mechanics. One year on the desktop and accessories. If something fails, we ship replacement parts next-day — you don't post anything back.
What if the controller or a motor fails in year four?+
That's exactly what the warranty is for — electronics are the most common failure on any electric desk, which is why ours are covered for the full five years. Email a photo or video with your order number; we diagnose within one business day and ship the replacement handset, control box or motor next-day. Spare parts remain available to buy after the warranty ends, so the desk never becomes landfill.
Payment & business
How can I pay? Can I pay later?+
Every order can be paid by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut Pay and Amazon Pay, processed securely by Stripe. Klarna and Clearpay are available on personal orders: choose one in the payment step and it shows you the ways to pay that are open for your basket. Which options appear, and whether you are approved, is the provider's decision rather than ours, and any repayment agreement is between you and them. Neither can be used for business orders.
Do prices include VAT?+
Yes — every price on this site includes VAT, and every order gets a full VAT invoice by email when it ships.
Can my employer pay for this?+
Often, yes. Under UK display-screen-equipment rules employers must assess workstations, and occupational health teams regularly approve sit-stand desks for back pain or RSI — it's worth asking before self-funding. We provide VAT invoices and quotes your finance team will accept, and volume pricing from 5 desks.
How does business pricing work?+
Published volume discounts apply automatically in the basket: 10% off 5–9 desks, 12% off 10–19, 15% off 20–49 and 20% off 50+ (or the sale price, if that is lower). For £10,000 or more of desks, within about 200 miles of Peterborough, we assemble them in your office, free. 30-day payment terms after credit approval. A real person answers within one business day for anything bespoke.
Who do I talk to if something goes wrong?+
Call 01733 300518, Monday–Friday 9–5, or email support. A person, in the UK, who can actually fix things.
